Behind the dark lenses of oversized sunglasses, the sitter remains both present and inaccessible. The portrait evokes the visual language of contemporary photography and fashion imagery, yet Mona von Wittlage transforms this familiar motif into a meditation on identity and concealment. What first appears as a gesture of self-assurance gradually reveals a more ambiguous psychological space.

The reflective surfaces of the glasses interrupt the possibility of direct contact. The gaze—the traditional anchor of portraiture—is withheld, replaced by a mirror-like opacity that reflects the world while concealing the self. Around this visual barrier, fluid brushstrokes and delicate ink lines allow the figure to emerge from the white ground of the paper with a striking sense of immediacy.
