Crucifixion
Blood on sanitary bags
215 x 160 cm
2004
In Crucifixion, Mona von Wittlage reimagines one of the most powerful symbols of Western culture. A body, painted in blood, hangs stretched upon the fragile grid of sanitary bags—its form suspended between transcendence and dissolution. The figure, reduced to stark lines and stains, confronts us with the raw immediacy of sacrifice, while the printed refrain “Ne pas jeter dans les W.C.” becomes a cold, bureaucratic echo against the intensity of the image.
Here, blood is both medium and message: a mark of suffering, mortality, and ultimate vulnerability. Yet the fragility of the support resists permanence, reminding us that every sacred image is bound to erasure.
Crucifixion is less an icon than an open wound—a meditation on faith, fragility, and the unending tension between transcendence and decay.
