Blood on sanitary bags
120 x 72 cm
2003
In A+, Mona von Wittlage lets the body unfold in its most monumental presence. A figure, sketched in blood, occupies the fragile grid of sanitary bags with a posture both vulnerable and sovereign. The title, A+, recalls not only a blood type but also a mark of excellence, fusing the intimacy of the body with the abstractions of science, language, and value.
The printed refrain “Ne pas jeter dans les W.C.” runs across the surface like a muted counter-voice, a bureaucratic warning juxtaposed with the elemental vitality of blood. Between regulation and rupture, permanence and disappearance, the work insists on the paradox of existence: that fragility and mortality are inseparable from strength and affirmation.
A+ stands as both declaration and reminder: that life, in its finite intensity, is itself the highest grade.
