In Religious Objects, Mona von Wittlage reduces the sacred to the scale of the ordinary. A crucified figure, drawn in blood, overlays the printed design of a Vatican souvenir bag, where ritual devotion meets consumer object. The collision of the ephemeral and the eternal, the disposable and the sacred, transforms a banal fragment of paper into a meditation on faith, fragility, and mortality.
The intimacy of scale intensifies the gesture: what might be held lightly in the hand becomes an icon of suffering and transcendence. Blood, fading and impermanent, reminds us that belief, like life itself, is fragile, fleeting, and profoundly human.
