BLOODPAINTINGS
#HeToo (freely inspired by Michelangelo Buonarroti)
Blood and graphite on paper

In #HeToo, Mona von Wittlage reimagines the iconic gesture of Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam through the lens of contemporary discourse. A reclining male figure, drawn in blood, extends his hand toward another rendered in graphite—a meeting of flesh and shadow, vulnerability and distance. The title reframes the biblical narrative, evoking a present-day movement that brings male vulnerability into the open, where silence once reigned.
Here, blood is both witness and wound, transforming the divine spark of creation into an acknowledgment of fragility, exposure, and shared humanity. The work unsettles and reorients the familiar masterpiece: no longer a story of omnipotent touch, but of trembling connection, of desire for recognition in a world still learning to listen.
