BLOODPAINTINGS
The Bequest (freely inspired by Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez)
Blood and graphite on paper
250 x 150 cm
2014 - 2016
In The equest, Mona von Wittlage revisits Velázquez’s enigmatic masterpiece, translating its play of gazes and presences into the fragile, perishable medium of blood and graphite. The Infanta and her entourage remain, yet their forms are reimagined: some drawn in cool graphite, others painted in blood, their bodies suspended between permanence and vulnerability.
In my Berlin studio.
The painter’s studio — once a space of royal representation — becomes a stage of questioning. Who is watching whom? What is handed down across centuries? Blood inscribes the figures with fragility, rewriting the grandeur of court portraiture into a meditation on mortality and memory.
The Bequest is not simply homage, but an interrogation: of legacy, of the image’s endurance, and of the silent contract between art, history, and the passing of time.
