Behind dark sunglasses and a seemingly composed expression, the figure remains deliberately elusive. The portrait evokes the visual codes of contemporary urban culture, yet beneath its outward coolness lies a palpable sense of vulnerability. The dishevelled hair, the exposed shoulder and the subtle asymmetry of the face reveal a presence that is far less self-assured than it first appears.
Rendered in bold contrasts of black ink and luminous white paper, the image oscillates between portrait and apparition. As so often in Mona von Wittlage’s work, identity remains unresolved: concealed, fragmented and fleeting. What emerges is not a likeness, but a meditation on the fragile boundary between self-projection and self-concealment, between visibility and anonymity.
