Bloody Nude
Blood on sanitary bags
96 x 84 cm
2003
In Bloody Nude, Mona von Wittlage lets the most intimate of materials trace the outline of a female figure across a fragile grid of sanitary bags. The body appears and dissolves at the same time, suspended between revelation and erasure. The printed warning, “Ne pas jeter dans les W.C.,” becomes part of the composition, a refrain of prohibition and denial that underscores the precariousness of what is shown.
The work transforms what is usually hidden into a presence that cannot be ignored. Blood, destined to fade, turns into an image both raw and delicate, at once seductive and unsettling. The materiality of the piece resists permanence, reminding us that all forms—whether bodies or artworks—are marked by fragility and disappearance. Bloody Nude thus embodies the paradox at the heart of the Bloodpaintings: the desire for eternity confronted with the blessing of transience.
