In Religious Objects, Mona von Wittlage compresses the monumental into the miniature. A crucified figure, drawn in blood, is inscribed onto a small Vatican souvenir bag, where the printed text of devotion becomes a backdrop for the raw immediacy of sacrifice. The sacred and the banal, eternity and disposability, collide within a single fragile surface.
Here, blood is not only medium but interruption—staining and transforming an object of mass reproduction into a singular meditation on faith and mortality. The scale intensifies the intimacy: a relic made of the most perishable matter.
In this work, devotion is stripped of permanence, reminding us that belief, like life itself, is both fragile and finite, yet deeply human in its impermanence.
